Smart Cameras as Embedded Systems

چکیده

A "smart camera" is basically a video camera coupled to a computer vision system in a tiny package. This communication begins stating the main differences between smart cameras and standard smart vision systems. A smart camera architecture is described whereby a combination of an on-board microprocessor and PLD’s allow for the embedding of image processing algorithms in the camera. A static thresholding algorithm is presented which demonstrates the ability to track non-uniformity in the inspection target. A multi camera inspection system application is presented where a maximum of twenty smart cameras may be networked together to a single host computer. Finally, a prediction is made of technological and applicational future evolution on smart cameras.

Decentralized Object Tracking in a Network of Embedded Smart Cameras

There is currently a strong trend towards the deployment of advanced computer vision methods on embedded systems. This deployment is very challenging since embedded platforms often provide limited resources such as computing performance, memory and power. In this paper we present a decentralized solution for tracking objects across multiple embedded smart cameras. Smart cameras combine video se...

Towards Pervasive Smart Camera Networks

Smart camera networks are real-time distributed embedded systems that perform computer vision using multiple cameras. This new approach has emerged thanks to a confluence of simultaneous advances in four key disciplines: computer vision, image sensors, embedded computing, and sensor networks. In this chapter, we briefly review and classify smart camera platforms and networks into single smart c...

Embedded Smart Cameras as Key Components in Reactive Sensor Systems

Smart cameras combine video sensing, video processing and communication onto a single embedded device. Due to their high onboard processing and communication power they are able to perform sophisticated video tasks in real time and can, therefore, react to changes in the camera’s environment. Such embedded smart cameras are excellent candidates for reactive sensor systems. In this paper we desc...

Distributed Peer-to-Peer Smart Cameras: Algorithms and Architectures

Advances in VLSI allow us to make cheap cameras and to supply them with powerful processors. To harness these capabilities, we need to move to peer-to-peer networks of smart cameras. Such systems perform distributed video analysis without a central server. Peer-to-peer systems save bandwidth and energy, are cheaper to install, and are more fault-tolerant. The Embedded Systems Group at Princeton...
